School Thief Review for Hostos Community College Intro to Theater
Plays that are simple, with one straight forward plot, and with a short timeframe developing the main events, and a clear and concise language or diction. All stories need a plot, without a plot no story can make sense. A plot is the sequence of events that give life, and meaning to a story in a play.
The plot comes to life with the participation of colorful characters. The characters make decisions that dramatize, and inject emotion into plays. Once a play has concluded or has reached its climax the audience may receive a message, or “thought”. For instance, a play can have a message of hope, courage, honesty, or success.
School Thief’s Characters colors
All plays have their own colors, and distinctions. Therefore, all characters must have distinctions in terms of language, behavior, and characteristics. For instance, Ms. Tillings and Nigel differ in terms of language, behavioral formality, and informality.
Nigel may say something is hard, and Ms. Tillings may say something is difficult describing the same thing, one using informal language, and the other using formal language with the same meaning. younger characters may use informal language, whereas older characters of statues may use formal language such as Ms. Tillings.
Music gives any play live. Music makes thrillers, suspense, and adventure. Not all plays need, or have music. Plays may use live instruments to insert excitement, and unique cultures into plays. Often relying on unique themes, and soundtracks.
A spectacle may be an illustration of an event, or an action. For instance, a play may illustrate a battle, or a celebration rather than narrated. Narrating is minimal in modern playwrights. Narrating I believe fits better in a book, or something similar. Plays can exploit the benefits of spectacles. Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet use the spectacle of death when the characters consume posing and die while the audience watches in shock.
Feelings that are triggered by visual spectacles. To illustrate a solid play minimal furniture is necessary, good well written characters are the core of any play. Couple with a well developed and unpredictable plot, any can succeed. The interaction between the angered Ms. Tillings, and Niger create an immersive and emotional connection with the audience. The unity of time helps the play come to life.
A short play that takes play all in a day is the epitome of Aristotle’s ideals. Taking place in a day helps the audience keep track, and focus on the developing events, eliminating the possibility of a wandering mind.
The unity of action, time, and place, when implemented effectively brings any play to life. The School Thief takes place in one day, in school, with a single plot based on who is the school thief that took the Daffodil from class. Therefore, this play excels in effectively implementing Aristotle’s unity of action, time, and place.
Conclusion
A school, one day, one event clearly portrayed. Ultimately, plays differ in terms of quality, and conveyance. However, when effectively implementing the unity of time, action, and place a story can come to life.
Plays that have an array of characters, plots, sequences, time and place can lose the audience, even if that is not always the case if the six elements of theater are well developed, and uniquely established. Aristotle’s ideals serve as the foundation of modern theater even though he died thousands of years ago, Impressive!!!
